Bellator Inks Three of Rampage Jackson’s Wolfslair Teammates for Season 9

On the heels of MMA icon and Wolfslair alum Quinton “Rampage” Jackson joining Bellator , the promotion announced Wednesday the signing of Gavin Sterritt, Peter Graham, and Linton “The Swarm” Vassell from the preferred UK agents Wolfslair team (www.wolfsagency.com). All three Wolfslair products will compete for Bellator during the promotions ninth season live on Spike and Spike.com. “Wolfslair has produced some of the best talent in MMA over the last 10 years, and as Bellator continues expanding internationally and particularly with our huge new TV partnership with Viva in the UK, Wolfslair will be a tremendous asset and partner for our brand in the future,” Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney said. Bellator 100 heads to Phoenix with Lima-Saunders, Season 9 170 tourney

Bellator MMA will make its first visit to Phoenix in September for Bellator 100. Promotion officials on Friday announced the card, which will feature the delayed Season 8 welterweight tournament final, plus the start of the Season 9 170-pound tourney. Bellator 100 will take place Sept. 20 at Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix. The main card will air live on Spike TV following prelims on Spike.com. Tickets for the event now are on sale starting at $25. In the main event, Douglas Lima (24-5 MMA, 6-1 BFC) meets Ben Saunders (16-5-2 MMA, 7-2 BFC) in the delayed Season 8 tournament final in the welterweight division, a fight that also is a rematch of the Season 5 tourney finals. The two were scheduled to meet at Bellator 93 in March, but consecutive Lima injuries pushed the fight back

Brian Melancon Agrees to Fight Kelvin Gastulem at UFC Fight Night 27

Brian Melancon has agreed to step in for Paulo Thiago at UFC Fight Night 27 , which is slated for Aug. 28 in Indianapolis. UFC officials announced the move on Tuesday. Thiago was slated to welcome The Ultimate Fighter 17 middleweight winner Kelvin Gastulem to the welterweight division, but after the Brazilian suffered a left knee injury, Melancon will get to do the honors. Gastelum (6-0) defeated heavily favored Team Sonnen teammate Uriah Hall at TUF 17 Finale on April 13 in his official UFC debut, becoming the youngest winner in the reality show’s history. In the days following the win, the 21-year-old announced that he would make the move to 170 pounds.

So I’ve got to get it done, and then I’ll look to the future. “Of course, I really want to challenge for the Cage Warriors title, and some day, I want to get to the UFC.” But that’s the goal of pretty much everyone in Cage Warriors, if you ask them. The promotion increasingly is taking the role of a springboard to the Las Vegas-based fight organization, as the signing of featherweight champ Conor McGregor attests. Erick Silva made quick work of Jason High at UFC on Fuel TV 10 in Fortaleza, Brazil, on Saturday night, re-establishing himself as one of the top prospects in the promotion’s welterweight division. High tried to shoot on Silva, but the Brazilian sprawled out and quickly outmaneuvered High, wrestling him to the mat, and taking his back. From there, Silva slid off to the side, securing High’s arm as he did so. Silva stretched out the armbar, leaving High with no other option but to tap out. BJ Penn is Considering a Return to Fighting in the UFC Lightweight Division

Former two-division UFC champion BJ Penn is contemplating a return to fighting in the lightweight division. UFC Tonight reports that “the door is still open” for Penn to “return to MMA in the near future.” In fact, the 34-year-old Hawaiian is currently in training to assess whether or not he is “mentally and physically prepared to get back into this sport.” Penn has bounced around weight classes throughout his career, but if he returns to fighting, it will be in the lightweight division. Penn (16-9-2) made his professional mixed martial arts debut in the UFC on May 4, 2001, at UFC 31. He fought in the inaugural UFC lightweight title fight at UFC 41 against Jens Pulver , losing by majority decision. In his welterweight debut, he defeated former champion Matt Hughes at UFC 46. He was later stripped of the title for accepting fights outside of the UFC. He returned to the UFC in an unsuccessful run in the 170-pound division before dropping back down to the lightweight division, capturing the title and defending it twice. While holding the lightweight belt, Penn moved back up to the welterweight division for a rematch with Georges St-Pierre . He was soundly defeated, unlike in their first meeting at UFC 58.

An injury has forced former Strikeforce welterweight champion Tarec Saffiedine out of his scheduled UFC on Fox 8 bout with Robbie Lawler . Siyar Bahadurzada has stepped up on short notice to replace Saffiedine against Lawler. UFC officials made the announcement on Tuesday. Bahadurzada (21-5-1) is a former Shooto middleweight champion. He was riding a six-fight winning streak when he made his UFC debut on April 14, 2012, against Paulo Thiago . The heavy-handed puncher knocked Thiago out in 42 seconds. His seven-fight winning streak came to an end when he met Dong Hyun Kim in his next outing on March 3. Kim utilized his superior wrestling to take Bahadurzada down and keep him there throughout the course of their three-round fight. Lawler (21-9-1) returned to the UFC and the welterweight division at UFC 157 in impressive fashion, knocking out Josh Koscheck in the first round. UFC on Fox 8 takes place on June 27 at the Key Arena in Seattle. The event is headlined by a flyweight title fight between champion Demetrious Johnson and challenger John Moraga .
