Darren Till GOIANIA, Brazil – Darren Till didn’t lack confidence coming into his UFC debut against Wendell Oliveira , and once he got comfortable inside the cage he showed why. After a blistering series of elbows from half-guard, Oliveira (24-9 MMA, 0-2 UFC) was left unconscious on the mat, while Till had his first UFC victory thanks to a TKO stoppage at the 1:37 mark of Round 2. The welterweight bout opened up the main card of today’s UFC Fight Night 67 event at Goiania Arena in Goiania, Goias, Brazil. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. Oliveira’s strategy in the bout early on seemed heavily dependent on clinch work. At first, that seemed like enough to neutralize Till, who found himself trapped against the cage and unable to mount much offense for large portions of the opening round

Waldburger (16-9 MMA, 4-4 UFC) and now meets fellow welterweight Wendell Oliveira (24-8 MMA, 1-0 UFC). UFC officials recently announced the bout. Promotional newcomer Ericka Almeida (7-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has stepped in as a replacement and will now fight fellow strawweight Lima at the May event.

Anytime a fighter is knocked out in the first round, let alone in just 80 seconds, something typically has gone awry. Given Oliveira had only a month to prepare for the fight, which came this past September in his native Brazil at UFC Fight Night 51 against Santiago Ponzinibbio, maybe he gets a slight pass, though. For his second trip to the octagon, he thinks things will be different. “My debut was nothing like I had hoped,” Oliveira told MMAjunkie.

UFC Fight Night 51 results: Santiago Ponzinibbio blasts through Wendell Oliveira

BRASILIA, Brazil – A clean left hook from Santiago Ponzinibbio (19-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) signaled the beginning of the end for Wendell Oliveira (24-8 MMA, 0-1 UFC), who succumbed to a TKO finish from a brutal flurry of punches at 1:20 of Round 1. The welterweight bout was part of the main card of today’s UFC Fight Night 51 event at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in Brasilia, Brazil. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass. An emotional Oliveira made the walk to the cage wrapped in the Brazilian flag, and for the first few seconds it seemed as if that emotion might serve him well in the fight. But after tenderizing Ponzinibbio’s thigh with leg kicks early on, Oliveira made the mistake of standing still in front of his opponent just a little too long, which is when Ponzinibbio unleashed the left hook that wobbled Oliveira, leaving him open for a follow-up right hand that forced him back against the fence.
