Sources: Bellator 96 fighter Steven Artoff tests positive for marijuana

This past month’s Bellator 96 in Thackerville, Okla., appears to have produced the tournament-based promotion’s first positive drug test. A source close to the event today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that preliminary-card fighter Steven Artoff was flagged for marijuana and is due next month at a hearing held by the tribal commission that oversaw the event. Carolyn Daniels of the Chickasaw Nation’s Office of the Gaming Commissioner declined to confirm the positive test, citing medical privacy, but said the tribal commission does hire an independent lab to randomly test an average of six to eight fighters per event. A source close to the event said 12 fighters in total were tested at the June 19 event. Bellator officials declined comment on the matter. Bellator 96 took place at WinStar World Casino.

Bellator "Summer Series" features two events instead of typical three

Instead of three events during its annual “Summer Series,” Bellator MMA this year will host just two. Sources close to the promotion confirmed that plan to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) not long after its first event of the summer, Bellator 96, which took place this past Wednesday at WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla. Bellator 97 takes place July 31 at Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M., near Albuquerque, but there will not be an August event. Instead, the promotion simply will roll into the start of its ninth season, which opens Sept.

‘King Mo’ Lawal vs. Seth Petruzelli fight video from Bellator 96

After being on the receiving end of a “Knockout of the Year” candidate, Muhammed Lawal delivered one of his own at Wednesday’s Bellator 96 event. In headliner of the event, Lawal (10-2 MMA, 2-1 BFC) scored a violent first-round knockout after blasting a downed Seth Petruzelli (14-8 MMA, 1-2 BFC) with a monstrous right hand. The one-hitter quitter moved Lawal to the finale of the four-man “Summer Series” light-heavyweight tournament, where he’ll meet fellow Bellator 96 winner Jacob Noe . With the win, Lawal successfully rebounded from a spinning-backfist knockout to Emanuel Newton earlier this year. Bellator 96 took place at WinStar World Casino at Thackerville, Okla. Bellator 96 Results: King Mo Lawal Moves into Tourney Finals; Babalu Sobral Retires

Bellator 96 took place at the WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla., on Wednesday night, setting the finals for both the promotion’s light heavyweight and heavyweight Summer Series tournaments. Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal avenged an early exit from the Season 9 tournament by making quick work of Seth Petruzelli in the Bellator 96 main event. An accidental headbutt stalled the fight in the opening moments, but when action picked up, Petruzelli tried to chop Lawal’s legs out from under him with low kicks. Lawal, however, caught one of the kicks and planted Petruzelli back down on the mat. Lawal stood up, timed his move, and dove in with a punch that put Petruzelli’s lights out… one punch, no muss, no fuss.

The 26 fighters competing on the Bellator MMA 96 fight card on Wednesday night at the WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla., weighed in on Tuesday making the semifinals of the heavyweight and light heavyweight Summer Series Tournaments official. Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion “King” Mo Lawal takes on Seth Petruzelli in the main event, hoping to rebound from his knockout loss to Emanuel Newton in his last outing. Two preliminary fighters, Derek Campos and Keith Berry, failed to make with and will forfeit a percentage of their fight purse to their opponents, but will still compete on the card. The first fight is expected to take place at 6 p.m. ET and will be streaming live on Spike.com The televised portion of the night will begin at 8 p.m

Queiroz off Bellator 96, Ryan Martinez meets Rich Hale in heavyweight tourney

On the day of the weigh-ins for Bellator 96, there has been a shakeup in the “Summer Series” heavyweight tournament. Vinicius Queiroz (6-3 MMA, 1-1 BFC) is out of a semifinal bout against Rich Hale (21-5 MMA, 6-2 BFC) in the four-man tourney, and stepping in to take his place will be Ryan Martinez (9-2 MMA, 2-1 BFC). Bellator announced the switch on Tuesday afternoon, saying Queiroz had suffered a knee injury. Bellator 96 takes place Wednesday at WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla. The three-hour main card airs on Spike TV following prelims on Spike.com. Weigh-ins for the event take place today in Oklahoma, which theoretically shouldn’t be much issue for Martinez since he fights at heavyweight

Ahead of Wednesday’s Bellator 96 event and the start of the organization’s latest Summer Series, Bellator has released a new video preview. Titled “Road to Redemption,” it focuses on two of the event’s main-card fighters: Muhammed Lawal and War Machine . Bellator 96 takes place at WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla. The main card airs on Spike TV following prelims on Spike.com. “King Mo” and War Machine are both part of the televised lineup. After an upset loss to Emanuel Newton in a Season 8 light-heavyweight tournament, Lawal (9-2 MMA, 1-1 BFC) returns to a four-man field and meets Seth Petruzelli (14-7 MMA, 1-1 BFC) in an opening-round matchup. War Machine (12-4 MMA, 0-0 BFC), meanwhile, returns from a 19-month layoff due to legal issues and injuries to fight Blas Avena (8-6 MMA, 1-0 BFC) in a non-tournament bout.
