CageSport Champ Drew Brokenshire Has Goals to Achieve Before Moving on to the Big Leagues

Coming off one of the bigger upsets of last year when he defeated the then-undefeated Julian Erosa for the CageSport 145-pound title, Drew “Eternal Fire” Brokenshire followed that up with an equally impressive win over veteran Enoch Wilson this past February in his first title defense. “I was really happy with that fight because I know how long Enoch’s been around and how skilled he is,” said Brokenshire. “The fight went four rounds and he ended up pulling out with an injury, but I was pretty happy with my performance and happy to get a win over such a seasoned veteran.” While he’s happy with his performance, Brokenshire admits his inability to stop the takedown made things closer than they should have been, and thus he’s worked hard to get that part of his game in order. “The biggest thing was Enoch was able to take me down quite a bit,” said Brokenshire. “He wasn’t able to do much damage to me, but he was able to control some of the fight. “We’ve been working real hard on it and I feel like we are making some headway. I feel like it is my weakest point and my losses have been to wrestlers who have been able to take me down, so if I can fix that, it will definitely make my life a lot easier.” Brokenshire told MMAWeekly.com that his recent work would come into play in a big way when he returns to CageSport on Saturday against Shorty Wiekel at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Wash. “It comes down to takedown defense,” said Brokenshire

There has been a rallying cry in the wrestling community ever since the Olympic committee decided to yank the sport from the Games starting in 2020. Since that time, wrestling has made it onto the short list to be re-added to the Olympics with a final vote coming later this year, but the supporters of the sport have learned a valuable lesson that anything less than growing is dying. In that vain, it appears the wrestling world is looking to take the next big step in promoting the sport on a national level. With the success of the jiu-jitsu promotion Metamoris putting on a major show just a few weeks ago that attracted a solid live audience, as well as buyers on pay-per-view, wrestling may be headed towards a similar format. On the heels of the recent U.S. World Team Trials in Oklahoma, efforts are being made along with USA wrestling to potentially build a promotable event similar to Metamoris featuring the best of the best in the wrestling world competing against one another. Sources have indicated that an event is potentially being planned for September with wrestlers from all walks of life being asked to participate in the event. In one of the biggest moves, however, rumors have it that the group organizing the effort is also targeting some of the biggest stars in the mixed martial arts world to participate in the event. Many of the top fighters in the UFC , Bellator and other promotions have come from wrestling backgrounds, so it makes perfect sense to showcase them on this type of event.

Former UFC Champ Frankie Edgar Picks Chris Weidman to Upset Anderson Silva at UFC 162

Former UFC lightweight titleholder Frankie Edgar takes on Charles Oliveira in the co-main event of UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman on July 6. Like many other fighters, however, he’s been asked to weigh in on the night’s headlining bout. He predicts Chris Weidman will upset Anderson Silva in the main event UFC middleweight title bout that night. “Gotta go with the East Coast boy Weidman. Winning King of the Cage Belt is Latest Step Along Frankie Saenz’s Road to the Top

In winning the King of the Cage flyweight championship (135-pound limit) on May 25, former Strikeforce Challengers participant Frankie Saenz has begun taking the necessary steps to make an impact in the 135-pound division. “I thought it was a pretty good match-up for myself,” said Saenz of his title fight against Marvin Garcia. “He and I are both wrestlers, so we just kind of planned to out-wrestle him. We knew he had a few overhand punches and stuff like that, so I just tried to be patient, calm and kept my hands up. “The game plan was just wear him down that first round by make him keep grappling and fighting for position, and then in the second round things would start opening for me.” Saenz feels the win over Garcia is a good indicator of where he’s at in his career. “It was definitely a good win,” said Saenz. “(Garcia’s) got a good record and any win like that is a good win
