Exclusivity is a tough ask for promoters who want to sign and build a fighter but may not necessarily have the resources to give them a living. And from a standpoint of prestige, convincing a prospect to stay in one place when the UFC is calling is nearly impossible. That’s why most regional MMA promotions write into their contracts an out clause that allows a fighter to void his or her deal if the industry-leader comes calling. But there are exceptions to the rule, most notably the shows that hope to compete with the UFC on the national stage

WSOF nearly lost Saturday’s main event the day before when Marlon Moraes had second thoughts about taking a 147-pound catchweight bout with Cody Bollinger . The matchup, which headlined WSOF 13 from Sands Bethlehem Event Center in Bethlehem, Pa., was originally signed for 140 pounds. However, Bollinger arrived at the pre-fight weigh-in at 147 and was unable to lose more weight. That forced WSOF officials into a frenzy

The catchweight fight headlining Saturday’s WSOF 13 card got an 11th-hour change to it – seven pounds worth. Marlon Moraes (13-4-1) and Cody Bollinger (16-2) were set to meet at a 140-pound catchweight in the main event. That fight came together this past week when Josh Hill had to pull out of a fight with Moraes, WSOF’s bantamweight champion, with an injury. But WSOF officials said Bollinger wasn’t able to reach 140 pounds, coming in at 147 in the hours prior to Friday’s weigh-ins. That prompted them to rebook the fight as a 147-pound catchweight.

Renan Barao has received heat from UFC President Dana White, fellow fighters, fans and others for his last-minute withdrawal from this past month’s UFC 177 main event with champ T.J. Dillashaw. One person standing by Barao’s side, though, is fellow Brazilian Marlon Moraes . The reigning WSOF bantamweight champion feels the MMA world is “going too hard” on Barao after he was hospitalized and was forced out of the fight just prior to weigh-ins. “I think they’re going too hard on him,” Moraes told MMAjunkie. “It’s just the first time it’s happened.

While Marlon Moraes ’ WSOF bantamweight title won’t be on the line when he meets Cody Bollinger in next weekend’s WSOF 13 headliner, the Brazilian considers it a title match and vows to send his opponent the belt with a loss. The Sept. 13 matchup, which headlines the NBC Sports Network-televised fight card at Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, Penn., was put together on just nine days’ notice after Moraes’ (13-4-1) original opponent, Josh Hill (10-0), withdrew from the contest due to injury.
