Filed under: Featured Videos , News , Radio Highlight , Videos , WSOF After his controversial submission loss to Rousimar Palhares at WSOF 22, Jake Shields ’ biggest concern was not that Palhares held on to his fight-winning kimura for too long, but rather that he felt he was repeatedly and intentionally eye-gouged during the bout. The Nevada State Athletic Commission didn’t seem to share that concern, and during a recent hearing, the commissioners addressed only Palhares’ (18-6) extended hold and not the attacks that left Shields (31-8-1) with blurry vision in his left eye for weeks after the event. The NSAC handed Palhares a two-year suspension due to his failure to release the submission in the Aug. 1 main event. The way the hearing played out left Shields, who was given 50 hours of community service for lashing out at Palhares after the bout, unhappy with the process. “I’m not big on long suspensions,” Shields told MMAjunkie Radio.

WSOF’s Ali Abdelaziz on Rousimar Palhares suspension: ‘It’s a sad day for me personally’

Rousimar Palhares, center, with Ray Sefo, left, and Ali Abdelaziz WSOF matchmaker Ali Abdelaziz spoke to MMAjunkie immediately after Rousimar Palhares was suspended for two years by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for holding a submission too long against Jake Shields at WSOF 22. Abdelaziz was sympathetic for Palhares and thought a one-year suspension was more appropriate. He added that he liked the fighter personally and is willing to help the Brazilian through a difficult time.

Palhares manager: We respectfully disagree with the NSAC’s punishment

Rousimar Palhares Rousimar Palhares ’ longtime manager said he and his client disagree with a two-year suspension issued today by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, but indicated they will most likely honor the decision. In a prepared statement, Alex Davis, who has written several columns for MMAjunkie on the business of MMA, said, “For now, we need time to review the next steps for Mr. Palhares’ career keeping in mind this suspension.” Palhares (18-6) was also fined $40,000 dollars in addition to court fees for holding on to a kimura submission too long in the third round of a title bout against Jake Shields (31-8-1) at August’s WSOF 22 in Las Vegas. It was the second time he had been suspended by an athletic commission for such an infraction, though not the first time his submissions had landed him in hot water, and not his first brush with disciplinary action .

Rousimar Palhares and Jake Shields The Nevada State Athletic Commission today voted unanimously to suspend ex-WSOF welterweight champion Rousimar Palhares two years and issue a $40,000 fine – in addition to court costs – for holding a submission of Jake Shields at WSOF 22. Palhares’ suspension is retroactive to the date of the fight, which took place Aug. 1 at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas

The four-member Nevada State Athletic Commission decided against fines and suspension for Shields (31-8-1) after he explained why he punched Palhares (18-6) after submitting to a kimura in the third round .

Rousimar Palhares and Jake Shields The Nevada State Athletic Commission today issued temporary suspensions to WSOF welterweights Rousimar Palhares and Jake Shields , as well as UFC fighter Caio Magalhaes , pending formal hearings for unsportsmanlike conduct. NSAC Executive Director Bob Bennett earlier this month told MMAjunkie he would issue a temporary suspension against the fighters , and a meeting today in Las Vegas formalized the decision. During today’s hearing, Nevada Deputy Attorney General Chris Eccles said he is in the process of drafting disciplinary complaints for Palhares and Shields for unsportsmanlike conduct. He plans to review their controversial bout for the commission when the matter is addressed in a hearing. Palhares (18-6) held a kimura submission on Shields (31-8-1) well after Shields tapped and the referee intervened in the third round of their headliner at WSOF 22 earlier this month. Shields then punched Palhares after the bell and the two were separated

This past weekend at WSOF 22, though, he said he felt like a “superstar.” In his first notable gig since the UFC cut ties with the veteran cutman , Duran was back to wrapping hands and patching cuts for Saturday’s NBCSN-televised event. He said the reaction from fans in attendance at Las Vegas’ Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, as well as those watching at home and lighting up his social-media accounts, was a bit overwhelming.

NSAC temporarily suspends WSOF’s Palhares and Shields; disciplinary complaints on way

Rousimar Palhares and Jake Shields In the wake of their controversial fight, the Nevada State Athletic Commission has temporarily suspended Rousimar Palhares and J ake Shields pending a formal complaint and hearing. NSAC Executive Director Bob Bennett today told MMAjunkie he’ll sign off on temporary suspension, as NBC Las Vegas’ Amber Dixon first reported via Twitter on Tuesday. “More than likely there will be a complaint filed for both fighters, and we’re still considering options for their unacceptable conduct,” Bennett said. In the headliner of this past Saturday’s WSOF 22 event, Palhares (18-6) submitted Shields (31-8-1) in the third round with a kimura and continued torquing the shoulder lock as the ref halted the fight.
