Nick Newell, Ray Sefo and Tom Marcellino Nick Newell began to think that years of fighting and hard training might be taking their toll on his body when he injured his knee during a relatively low-impact training session recently. A few weeks later, when he hurt his back stretching out before practice, he knew he had a problem. “It’s not even the sparring that’s doing it to me,” Newell told MMAjunkie.

Jon Fitch says he gave Yushin Okami’s strength too much respect at WSOF 24

Jon Fitch Jon Fitch was ready for a beast when he fought Yushin Okami in the main event of WSOF 24. He was so ready for Okami’s strength, in fact, that he says he gave too much respect to the Japanese fighter. Fitch (27-7-1) outworked Okami (30-10) to take a unanimous decision victory at the event, which Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn. The main card aired on NBCSN following prelims on MMAjunkie. The official scorecards read 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.

Newell (13-1) pulled a surprise move on Saturday when he announced the end of his career following a unanimous decision victory over Tom Marcellino (7-4) at WSOF 24.

Newell (13-1), a former WSOF lightweight title challenger and former XFC lightweight champion, announced his retirement following his win over Marcellino in a fight he admitted afterward wasn’t his best performance.

In a battle between a pair of veterans and former UFC title challengers, Jon Fitch moved on to a welterweight championship opportunity with a grinding win over Yushin Okami on Saturday in the WSOF 24 main event. Fitch (27-7-1) used a takedown-heavy attack against Okami (30-10), who dropped down to 170 pounds from middleweight and took a pair of 30-27 scores and a 29-28 in the headliner. Fitch, who challenged Georges St-Pierre for the UFC’s welterweight title in 2008, now will fight former Strikeforce champion Jake Shields for WSOF’s vacant welterweight title. After decision win at WSOF 24, Nick Newell announces retirement from MMA

Nick Newell MASHANTUCKET, Conn. – In a surprising move, recent WSOF lightweight title challenger Nick Newell won his fight Saturday night, then announced his retirement. Newell (13-1) will leave MMA with just one loss – to current WSOF lightweight champ Justin Gaethje in a July 2014 title fight. Newell, born with a congenital amputation of his left arm, said that at 29, with more than half his life spent in wrestling and MMA, his body can no longer take the toll. He also said he believes his retirement will stick. “Never say never, but this is not like I’m going to change my mind on Monday,” Newell told MMAjunkie after WSOF 24, which took place at Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Nashantuck, Conn.
