HONOLULU – It’s fight week for Bellator in Hawaii, but two bouts have been removed from Friday’s event, including the return of “Goyito” Erik Perez . Bellator 278 takes place at Neal S. Blaisdell Center with the main card airing on Showtime after prelims on MMA Junkie. The event is the first half of a two-night doubleheader for the promotion at the same arena. Perez (20-8 MMA, 1-2 BMMA) withdrew from his scheduled bantamweight bout against Cee Jay Hamilton (15-9 MMA, 0-2 BMMA) for undisclosed reasons, multiple people with knowledge of the situation informed MMA Junkie

Newell (16-3 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) faces Zane (14-9 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) this Friday on the main card of Bellator 241, looking to rebound from his upset loss to Manny Muro last October. It was a frustrating homecoming for Newell, who struggled to fend off Muro’s takedowns and clinch game in the latter rounds of the split-decision loss, but he insists that he won’t allow that to happen again. “You look at all my fights, everyone says, ‘Oh, Nick’s a grappler, he’s a black belt,’ but the only way that people beat me is just by holding a stupid-ass body lock and not fighting me,” Newell told MMA Junkie

Bellator 241 free fight: Zach Zane outworks Nainoa Dung in promotional debut

Zach Zane wasn’t about to let another big opportunity slip away. Zane (14-9 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) failed to make good on his opportunity at Dana White’s Contender Series this past June, but made sure things went differently when he made his Bellator debut in December. He faced fellow Hawaiian Nainoa Dung at Bellator 236 in Honolulu and used a grapple-heavy approach to score a unanimous decision win. In Round 1, Zane used his wrestling early to control the fight. The brown belt in jiu-jitsu was able to get the fight back down to the mat in Round 2, putting heavy pressure on Dung with multiple submission attempts. The two engaged in a beautiful scramble, with Dung sweeping Zane, but Zane was able to wound up in top position once again

HONOLULU – Zach Zane claimed a unanimous decision in his all-Hawaii battle at Bellator 236, then said he never wants to face a fellow islander again. “Man, that was a lot of fun,” he told MMA Junkie backstage after his victory over fellow Hawaiian Nainoa Dung on Saturday night. “Nothing but gratuity in my heart. Just kinda in shock and lost for words. I’m such a grateful guy.” Zane (14-9, 1-0 BMMA) went into his battle with Dung (3-1, 2-1 BMMA) with a significant experience advantage, but it seemed pre-fight that it was his opponent who received the greater promotional push. While that situation may have irked some fighters, Zane said he appreciated why that was the case

HONOLULU – Zach Zane ’s grappling advantage and MMA experience was more than Nainoa Dung was prepared for on Saturday at Bellator 236, and it showed in the result. Although Dung (3-1 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) nearly staged a final-round comeback, Zane’s (14-9 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) overwhelming success with takedowns in the first two rounds put him ahead on the scorecards for the unanimous decision win. The judges’ scores were 29-28 across the board. The lightweight bout opened up the Bellator 236 main card at Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu. HONOLULU – Nainoa Dung says he is ready to topple Hawaii’s No. 1 lightweight and take the mantle as his own as he looks to kick off his Bellator career with a significant scalp in his promotional debut. Dung (3-0, 0-0 BMMA) takes on fellow debutant – and fellow Hawaiian – Zach Zane (13-9, 0-0 BMMA) at Bellator 236 in a bout that should determine the unofficial No. 1 155 pounder in Hawaii, and although he may be conceding an experience advantage to his opponent, Dung says his skillset, and his training at Hard Knocks 365, will stand him in good stead for the biggest fight of his career.
