In what proved to be one of the best female fights in MMA history, 19-year-old Angela Lee captured her first major title on May 6 at “ONE Championship 42: Ascent to Power” in Kallang, Singapore. The gifted grappler narrowly edged out former Deep Jewels titleholder Mei Yamaguchi in an incredible five-round main event to become the inaugural ONE women’s atomweight (115-pound) champion. Lee (6-0) earned her spot in the championship headliner by submitting five straight opponents for ONE during the past year, and she came close to becoming the first woman to submit Yamaguchi (15-9-1) early in their title tilt. After mounting Yamaguchi in the opening round, Lee locked on a tight guillotine choke in a scramble as referee Olivier Coste looked on intently.
