Former Strikeforce champion Miesha Tate ’s long journey to the top of the UFC women’s bantamweight division culminated with a sensational victory on Saturday night at UFC 196 in Las Vegas. In what may have been her final shot at the title, Tate choked out Holly Holm in the fifth round to become the new UFC women’s bantamweight champion. Leading up to Saturday’s co-main event, some fans and analysts felt that Tate (18-5 MMA, 5-2 UFC) would struggle against Holm’s (10-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) elite striking skills and predicted a quick victory for the defending champion. Others maintained that styles make fights and that Tate would take control of the bout on the mat.
