Barberena (11-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) scored a second-round arm-triangle submission of Sage Northcutt (7-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in his previous outing. The UFC had thrown a heavy amount of marketing behind then-teenager Northcutt, but Barberena took over the fight and proved to be too gritty to handle as the fight wore on.
