The battle for the unofficial “Gross MMA Injury of the Night” award at UFC on ESPN+ 14 on Saturday in Montevideo was a keenly-contested affair, with “Platinum” Mike Perry’s destroyed nose likely to attract the most post-fight traffic. But the Florida native wasn’t the only man who needed some repair work done on fight night. The doctors were forced to intervene halfway through the opening round of Brazilian prospect Raulian Paiva ’s flyweight prelim bout against Rogerio Bontorin. The reason: A nasty gash above Paiva’s right eye. And while the TV shots at the time showed there was absolutely no question over the octagonside physician’s call to stop the contest, they really didn’t do justice to just how bad the cut above Paiva’s right eye actually was. Thankfully (or regrettably, depending on how squeamish you are) UFC president Dana White was on hand to show us with a pair of stomach-turning pictures.
