Recently, he made a few not far from the Pacific Ocean within the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Calif., one of the most renowned MMA gyms in the world. White, in an interview with Setanta Sports in Ireland, said he believes some training facilities are in the “stone ages” with their practice methods and “need to be brought up to date.” To illustrate his theory that the fighters at the gym train too hard, he pointed to his heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez , a longtime AKA member, being frequently injured. Velasquez hasn’t fought since October 2013, but he’s scheduled to return in a title unification bout against interim champ Fabricio Werdum in June at UFC 188. On Tuesday, MMAjunkie paid a visit to the AKA gym and got some of its veteran fighters’ opinions on White’s comments, as well as that of owner and head coach Javier Mendez.
