One former UFC champion has come to the defense of a current titleholder following his recent loss. In Saturday’s UFC 196 pay-per-view headliner in Las Vegas, featherweight champion Conor McGregor (19-3 MMA, 7-1 UFC) perhaps got a little too ambitious when he agreed to move up to welterweight for a non-title fight with Nate Diaz (19-10 MMA, 14-8 UFC). McGregor’s loss, which came via second-round rear-naked choke , marked his first UFC defeat, and it snapped an overall 15-fight winning streak. On Sunday, former light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones posted a video message on Instagram to commend McGregor for the way he handled the defeat: “I wanted to take a quick second to shout out Conor McGregor for the way he handled defeat last night,” Jones says in the video. “He really handled it like a champion. You know, he took a gamble, fighting anyone, anywhere.
