Friday was one of those days when UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones randomly decides to go on X and respond to fans. As has been the case a lot lately, the topic du joir – the one that really fires people up – is Jones’ continued insistence that defending his title against former champ Stipe Miocic rather than unify with interim champ Tom Aspinall is the way to go at this stage of his career. To Jones, Miocic represents the legacy fight that cements himself as the undisputed MMA GOAT when, in reality, it doesn’t because Miocic, at 42, is well past his prime and has been inactive since a knockout loss more than three years ago . A win simply will fall flat in a way that Jones either doesn’t realize or doesn’t care to. But Jones is steadfast in his belief otherwise and whenever enough people call for him to fight an actual threat in 31-year-old Aspinall and unify the belts, which is the right thing to do anyway, Jones can’t help but defend himself on X.
