The Nevada State Athletic Commission is looking at toughening up on licensees who are found to have used banned substances. At a meeting today in Las Vegas, the NSAC appointed commissioner Anthony Marnell III, a harsh critic of PED users, to produce a potential guideline for the length of suspensions in doping cases. Commissioner Raymond “Skip” Avansino also agreed to assist the commissioner. NSAC chair Francisco Aguilar said the commission had “run a bit off course” in recent decisions, referring to a lifetime ban and $70,000 fine given to Wanderlei Silva after he evaded a random drug test in advance of a scheduled bout at UFC 175. Commissioner Bill Brady said the commission “upped the ante” in cases such as Silva but recommended harsher punishments for PED usage. “It’s time for those who don’t want to play by the rules are punished severely for it,” he said.
