Askren (14-0)  left Bellator MMA in July 2013 as an undefeated champion, seemingly destined for the UFC. Instead, UFC President Dana White said that the UFC had “no interest” in signing Askren. The two sides have sniped at each other in the media since that point and Askren signed a deal to fight for One Championship where he quickly became welterweight champion
