John McCarthy LAS VEGAS – The referee and judging assignments are set for this month’s UFC 183-headlining superfight. Veteran official John McCarthy, who’s overseen some of the sport’s biggest fights throughout the history of the sport, will ref the headliner between former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva (33-6 MMA, 16-2 UFC) and former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz (26-9 MMA, 7-6 UFC). McCarthy was picked from a pool of officials that also included Herb Dean and Mark Smith. UFC 183 takes place Jan. 31 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass
