Gunnar Nelson LAS VEGAS – Gunnar Nelson proved points on the feet and the ground, dropping Brandon Thatch with a combination of punches, then sinking in a fight-ending rear-naked choke in Round 1. The bout was part of the main card of today’s UFC 189 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It aired pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. Nelson (14-3-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) came out for Round 1 in his standard karate stance while Thatch (11-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) looked to keep at range and utilize his length in the striking game. Nelson landed a big shot that dropped Thatch to the canvas. With Thatch on the mat, Nelson quickly shifted gears, landing some shots on the ground and moving to full mount.
