St-Pierre (25-2 MMA, 19-2 UFC), who hasn’t competed since beating Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 in November 2013, today told “ The MMA Hour ” that he recently became free agent because his lawyer terminated his UFC contract after several negotiations to make his long-awaited return to the octagon fell through. The UFC was silent on the issue in the immediate hours following St-Pierre’s declaration, but the organization finally broke its silence tonight in a prepared statement sent to MMAjunkie. “Georges St-Pierre remains under an existing agreement with Zuffa, LLC as his MMA promoter,” the statement read. “Zuffa intends to honor its agreement with St-Pierre and reserves its rights under the law to have St-Pierre do the same.” According to St-Pierre, 35, discussions about a UFC comeback started in February when he told the UFC he was eager to end his lengthy hiatus and return to competition.
