Heading into UFC 116 in July 2010,  Brock Lesnar was the UFC heavyweight champion but had pulled out of two scheduled fights with  Shane Carwin due to illness.  Carwin defeated former champion  Frank Mir at UFC 111 to capture the interim heavyweight crown in Lesnar’s absence setting up a title unification bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
